Description

A magnificent house built at the end of the 19th century, really full of history, an important part of the Romanian architectural creation of that period, located in the historical area Cişmigiu, on Ştirbei Vodă Street, about 300 m from Cismigiu Park. The house belonged to General Constantin D. Nicolescu, a prominent figure during King Michael's reign, an example of dedication and patriotism, a former captain in the First World War cavalry regiment, decorated with ’Mihai Viteazul’’ Order and the Order “Legion of Honor”, officer of Bucharest, General Secretary of the Ministry of Defense and former dissident in the National Resistance Movement against Communism, being finally arrested and convicted and the entire family persecuted by the communist regime.

The large and bright rooms with a circular layout, with arcades and imposing columns, bring back the nobleness of the late 19th century and beginning of 20th century. Through a conscientious restoration process, it can become a noble residence for people with style!

Constantin D. Nicolescu (Costica Niculescu as his friends were calling him), was a cavalry officer with the rank of general of Army Corps, former Secretary General, Undersecretary of State, Minister Secretary of State in the Department of National Defense between 1938-1940, then Minister of war, military commander of the capital, commander of the 5th Army Corps during the war, then, after 23rd of August 1944, the Head of the Royal Military House until December 1947, decorated with the Order “Mihai Viteazul”, with the "Crown of Romania" Great Officers and Great Crosses, with the" Faithful Service ", the Great Officer, with the" Star of Romania "with the sword Great Officers and with many other orders and medals received in World War I and World War II, and finally a political prisoner for seven years in the communist jails.

"One night in 1948, awakened from sleep, I saw the house surrounded by agents and our father ready for the road, dressed in thick clothes and with a ragbag in his hand. He kissed us all and left leaving to my brother, who had not yet reached the age of 10, the task of remaining the head of the family in his absence, "confesses Dr. Serban C. Nicolescu, the son of the general.

"The fate of my family after the arrest of our father was identical to the one of many others under the communist regime. It followed the evacuation from our house and our throwing on the roads. Under the shameless slogan of class struggle followed the persecution in schools, the refusal to attend high school, then college, then to work. An entire family of three children was left without any means of subsistence, and survived from selling the goods in the terrible Flea market, to the Consignment, or directly to those who were getting rich under communism."

After seven years of jail, from the tall, strong, imposing man, he remained a wreck.

He was a perfect man with a high education and a soul of special sensitivity. He sincerely loved his homeland and the nation, respecting his oath of faith towards the Flag and the King, given at the beginning of his military career. He refused to leave the country with the royal suite, being convinced that nothing could be imputed to him in his 40 years’ activity, during which he faithfully served his country.

Intransigent and dignified character, who valued the honor of the military garment, he preferred after getting out of prison, at nearly 70 years old, to lead a humble existence of street seller of lottery tickets and then of the lottery – sweepstakes, rather than asking for some favor to the communist regime.

In 1956, General Constantin Nicolescu wrote, one year after leaving the prison, the memorial work "Calvary of the Romanian Nation". He wrote everything he had lived and felt in all these years, and then he sealed everything and hid it. The pride dictated to him not to make known to his family his inurement, in order not to be compassionate. The manuscript stood hidden for nearly 20 years, after which its pages threatened by moisture were recopied, sealed and hidden again, surviving until today.
